Have you chosen a word of the year for next year? While I believe a word of the year is a great practice, it only works if you focus on it throughout the year. When I decided to choose a word of the year a few years ago, I had no idea just how much it would change my life. Focusing on one word to inspire me throughout the year was a game changer for me. Instead of a bunch of New Year’s resolutions I’d forget before the end of January, my word became my anthem for the year. I still create yearly goals to achieve with my goal planner, but they revolve around my word for the year.
2020 brought many joys but it also brought with it a lot of hardship. So while I rejoice and thank God for 2020, I am excited to head into a new year to see what God has in store for me. And all of this has lead to my word for this year.
2018 was the year of Resilience.
2019 was the year of Becoming.
2020 was the year to Flourish.
2021 Word of Year is to Revive

I couldn’t have picked a better word for my year. Each time I think about it, it brings up new feelings of trusting in God and knowing that His ways are better. I’m reviving for this year and all of my goals are coming out of this goal.
Revive just seemed like the right fit. But then I read the actual definitions and knew this was my word!
- To activate, set in motion, or take up again; renew
- To restore to life or consciousness; become active or flourishing again
- To make operative or valid again
As I was thinking through my goals and my word, I knew I needed a bible verse to focus on along with my word. I am so thankful for how this is all coming together in my mind. Here’s my bible verse for 2021 to go along with my word:
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
-Psalm 51:10 NIV
Choosing a word to dictate the year ahead as an alternative to New Year’s resolutions has truly been one of the best decisions I’ve made. If you haven’t given it a try, I’m here today to encourage you to go for it. Choose a word as a theme for the coming year and don’t look back. You’ll be so glad you did!
What an inspiring post! I will also focus more on my Word for the Year, pair with God’s promise & word and center my 2021 around it. I can’t wait to see what new levels God will lead RDD in 2021!!! So very proud AS WELL AS inspired by you!!!!
